Darkzone - Awakening

Written by Intrinsic

Nearing a decade ago I released this web (demoscene) demo  called "Awakening" as a tribute to my oldskool demoscene PC group Darkzone. , my nick was "Kingpin" back in 1991-93, and back then it was mostly programming in 16 & 32bit x86 assembly language on PC.

(Caution! it might lock up your browser if on a slow computer)

About This Shockwave/Director Demo

All models are either generated or modified by code realtime, and all movement is done with code, synced to music manually by hand.

At the time I was heavily into using Macromedia Director (now Adobe Director) and Shockwave 3D. Many have escaped the Director developer scene but there are a few hardcore into Director still, others have started using Unity3D (game engine) as the platform of choice (for web 3D games++), still Director is alive due to a vast amount of old projects made with it, and for a long time now, Director market penetration has been going down (afaik) compared to f.ex. Flash (also now acquired by Adobe from Macromedia), except for games specifically, it is widely used still for games. The programming language "Lingo" was at that time interpreted (scripting) with slow performance due to having to translate while running into what the computer can understand, simplified. Now it supports AS3 I believe, and tighter integration also with Flash. As said it is now a bit dated browser plugin technology, BUT it is still being developed, and there are current rumors Director 12 might be able to generate content/games to run on iPad2 and iOS, rumors! but exciting! and a non-public video on youtube aledgedly showing a game running on an iPad2 with touch-control (I've seen it but there's no way of telling if it is 100% real, and/or what possibilities this will give if it comes..

Games & Experiments

I've developed a number of webgames before getting back into C++ programming, and made a lot of small demos/experiments things I might put somewhere online and link from here, and it still have some possibilities, also Director is great for a prototyping and RAD (rapid development) tool, it can do things that Flash can't (as of my current knowledge anyway, specially since Director has loads of "xtras" (plugins much like my FreeFrame effects) that can be integrated/used in it, I see now I should edit this again later and maybe add more references and intro to what Director is, enough for now.

I still have a few contacts off & on from the old Director crowd: robotfunk, robotduck, noisecrime, starvanger, toxi, biomorphica and others, all amazing artists & programmers. I focus now on VJFX.com and IntrinsicFX products, check them out here! But with these rumors I might have some unreleased games I'd love to get running on iPad/iOS, that'd be awesome!

The work on this demo took about 4+ months of rather extreme development hours around the clock, and I later posted these smaller demos that didn't make it into the main project result, some also produced in the aftermath since inspiration was a bit overwhelming; for curious spectators, underneath are links to these (from the images).

Models Are Programmatically Generated

Lingo was the most used programming language in Director 8.5, now Javascript and ActionScript is optional also to use in Director 11.5 (which I recently required a renewal license for). Some demos underneath also contain self-constructing/modifying code (code constructing code, specifically to make faster processing of marching-cubes tech for the metaballs). Caution! If on a slow computer, watch this video instead:

..as these Shockwave 3D demos are pretty processing intensive and might cause browser lock up on slower machines! Click images to see actual shockwave demos in shadowbox (requires Shockwave browser plugin).

Demos underneath are also programmatically generated, except the two last "spikeball" ones..

As you see there is more to making a demo than just the result. This is just a fraction of my 4gb folder with stuff related to the demo, I might put some sourcefiles online later too.
